Windlass Space (Shelter Deck)

Boiler Rooms 5 and 6

This space contained the steam engines driving the anchor windlass drums and capstans on the forecastle deck, and the drum for the centre anchor hawser. The basic layout of the machinery is known from deck plans, but no detailed drawings are known to exist. Some of the details shown here are conjectural, based on the liner Oceanic (1899).

* The cable drum was probably driven by the starboard windlass engine, but details of the arrangement are not known.
 
** The Thermotank placement is shown for the ships as built. The Olympic's Thermotank arrangement was changed in later years.
